TFN and ABN for Thai in Sydney

You may use your agency or do this yourself. Getting a TFN (Tax File Number) is important and not too hard. When you work you tell people your TFN and the tax you pay is recorded. If you are a student you can claim tax back when you leave Australia and this will give you more money when you go home.

ABN (Australian Business Number). Thai People can get an ABN if they want to work as a small business for example as a cleaner and not for a cleaning company. You apply for your ABN on line and then tell the Tax people how much you work. You do not need an ABN if you work for a normal company like a Thai Restaurant or Shop.

This Apartment Is a scam (where they try to take your money and give you nothing.

"Robert" robert.kindell53@gmail.com says he lives out of the country but has a lovely apartment to rent out. He then sends you TNT delivery details for his keys and instructions that TNT will deliver your payment via Western Union once you have the keys.

It does sound too good to be true and unfortunately it is.

The TNT mail is actually from deliveryman.com (should be .con) which is a known internet scam site faking emails and forms. The TNT form talks of Western Union Money Transfers but is entirely faked. TNT do not offer this service.

Taxi to Airport Sydney

Don't be fooled by bad taxi drivers.

from Thai Town to Sydney Airport should be about $30. Do not let a taxi driver take you the wrong way and charge you more - some people have been charged $50 $70 and more!

It is a simple easy journey from Thai Town or any part of Sydney City out to the airport but many taxi drivers are cheating people with long journeys and asking for more money.

You have to say to the taxi driver at the begining "About how much will this cost?" "I think it should be under $30"

if they want more then say "mai ow na ka!!"

Cheap Rooms for Thai in Sydney

You should share a room with friends to save money. Look on street crossings for adverts for rooms, take as many phone numbers as you can and try to look at different places. Talk to people in the house to see if the landlord is friendly and the place is nice to stay.

There is a thing called a Sunny Room and it can be expensive to stay in, it is a room on a balcony of an apartment.

The cheapest rooms are Living Rooms where you share an apartment. This can be noisy if you live with lots of people but is cheap. If you live with Thai people you should have fun but living with other nationalities will be better for you learning English.

Places to buy Thai Food

You can find most of the food from Thailand in Thai Town and Paddy Market. Paddy Market is open at the weekend and you can buy fruit and vegetables, after about 5pm the food is cheaper. Thai Town has a few Thai shops where you can get all your favourite food and it is not too expensive. Anything from Tamarind to Thai Deserts, Ready Made Thai Food for Takeaway and more. In Thai Town you will be able to talk to shop owners in Thai language, but don't forget to practice your English.

The best places for value food shopping are Coles and Woolworths, they both have stores all over Sydney and have everything you can think of. These shops are much cheaper than buying things at 7-Eleven or other convenience stores. If you want a lamp, fan, TV or anything else like that, you can go to Vinnies second-hand shops. For example a toaster for $3. There is one Vinnies store in Newtown and one on Elizabeth Street 100meters up hill from Central Station.

Work for Thai's in Sydney

Most Thai people work in the Kitchens of Thai Restaurants. You will also find work as a waitress or waiter, as a shop assistant and in selling jobs. Lots of Thai People also do cleaning work, you can find this with agencies or private houses. Be friendly and honest and speak clearly, you will be able to work for less money than Australians because Thai people are good with money, but do not work for less then the minimum wage. The best way to find work is advertise yourself here and look on notice boards for work. Friends may help you find work where they work too. Don't give up, sometimes finding work can be a little hard but keep trying and you will be ok.

Wentworth Avenue Sydney

$14 and up. Very Small and very popular with Thai's and locals, very unique Thai Food. Half on the street, with heaters when cold, and half indoors, it is packed out at meal times. They pride themselves with a special recipe and their popularity means it must be working. The restaurant is a little out of the way (view map below for details), but it is only a short walk and probably worth it.

Chilli Cha Cha

Cambell St Sydney

Chilli Cha Cha is a lovely medium sized Thai restaurant in Haymarket, Thai Town. The size is just right, small enough to be cosy and not at all cramped. The food is great, it is upwards of $7 per meal and the chef can serve up food that is both traditional and mouthwatering to the Aussie or Thai pallet. From old favourites like Pad Thai to larger spicy fish dishes, the menu is big enough for variety yet not overbearing in choices.

The layout of the restaurant is quite modern, in black, red and silver. The most comfy seats are the Red ones at either side. The food is prepared out back, so unfortunately you miss the action there, but the décor is nice and simple and the window brings in lots of light.

Elephant Jump is a small place, nicely decorated and with a “live kitchen”. The food is prepared right along side the diners and the atmosphere is friendly and active. It gets very busy around lunch times, which is fun, but those wanting some space should hold on until later when things calm down. The restaurant is small yet it gives a nice cosy feel. Prices are very reasonable ranging around $7 and up.

The Bank Hotel, Newtown

Sumalee is part of the Bank Hotel in Newtown. The restaurant is half outdoors, so truly comes to life in good weather, the other days you just need to snuggle up inside. Sumalee is more expensive than the average Thai restaurant and the meals are huge! The food is quite something, Thai food with a mix of Australia, and they cater for anyone including large parties. The décor is minimal and classy, the Bank Hotel itself is a lively place to be especially at the weekends, so you can have a drink afterwards, and maybe a dance too.

3 Mama Chefs has some nice touches, large varied menu, and a good feel. It sufferers very slightly in layout due to it being very long in shape, but this should not be seen as any reason not to like the place. The food is as good as anywhere and there is a lot to choose from, prices like most places range from $7 and up. The food is prepared in a kitchen which is in sight but a long way from most customers who mostly sit along the one long side of the place on the comfy red bench. Busy at lunch and dinner, but with plenty of space to sit.

Well priced and tasty and _very_very_small! Yet cosy and fun. Just down from Chilli Cha Cha on Cambell Street next to the Lucky Thai supermarket. There is only limited seating and if you get one you will have fun. This is more of a pop in place than most mainly due to its size. It is very popular with Thai people so that is a good sign for the food quality.

A little more expensive than most in the area, yet only a little. This place is often packed but has quite a lot of seating. The food is cooked very openly, right along side people waiting to get in, you can even take a peak into the kitchen from out front. You can feel the action from the red hot, crackling wok to the busy waitresses. A definite must try in the area.
